I feel that by the third Final Fantasy for the Famicom that the interface has come into its modern form that future FF's would continue to use.

The only thing that felt clunky was switching equipment. You could switch entire spell lists between characters (even ones that couldn't use the spells, like fighters. Basically, each of my four characters was a napsack for 3 of each of the 8 magic levels), but in order to change out equipment and individual spells you had to have the inventory space in order to take the stuff off (also, magic had to be disequiped in the magic menu but could only be equiped in the inventory menu).

Everything else was smartly done, though, as button clicks were reduced by disequiping an equipment slot as soon as a slot is selected (or you have the option to disequip everything on a character), avoiding the classic menu question: "Are you sure Yes or No<- " to "Are you sure 'A' Yes or 'B' No", and having B open a small inventory window outside of the Start menu either when you are not with a fifth party member (otherwise you speak with them for plot/hints) or when you talk to someone (this allows you to give people items with sometimes interesting results).

After playing FF1-3 it's a shame that later games would give up the more tactical target selection system of the first and second games, the Vancian-like spell-levels of the first and third games, the only hyperlink conversation system I have liked in all of gaming from the second, and the 'B' inventory of the third. I used the Z 'A', X 'B', C 'Select', V 'Start', and directional buttons to emulate the NES controler for FF3, and I love that simple but slick interface.

Sorry about the rant ;) Giauzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10546859151525161696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4946916641850178817.post-17947683694773224652013-03-22T13:11:49.221-07:002013-03-22T13:11:49.221-07:00I think that this is a fair rating, Zenic. It's funny, though: While I recognize the things you didn't like about the game, I always find that, whenever I play through it, I enjoy the hell out of it. I don't know if it's just nostalgia, or the simple, yet effective, interface and design. There's something about the game world and the story--scanty though it is--that seems to suck me in. I think I especially appreciate all the extra items they added to the game. I thoug this was a fun game though. I will probrably play FF2 now when you get to it. I'm disappointed you Genesis is broke. Was really looking forward to Super Hydlide next. Did you make sure it was the console and not the game? A lot of old genesis systems get bad power adapters or need cap replacements. But to not get a power light Leeds me to believe a bad power adapter. I'd try to avoid the clone consoles as they are not as accurate as they don't have as good sound and graphical glitches. The AT games ones are basically emulators on a chip. And the one redeeming thing I like about Super Hydlide is it has great music. It's actually not that bad. You may actually like it. The graphics just are really not that good though.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11560711373831583403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4946916641850178817.post-11785986072987025092013-03-20T10:27:14.284-07:002013-03-20T10:27:14.284-07:00As far as I'm aware, every FF has had an in-ga...As far as I'm aware, every FF has had an in-game overworld map to varying extents. FFII's was really interesting in that it was a simulated globe (or as close as they could manage on the Famicom); though I think a torus would've been far more accurate since it scrolls freely in both directions.Jonothanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06305455959377150878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4946916641850178817.post-40113565548767329312013-03-20T08:41:21.755-07:002013-03-20T08:41:21.755-07:00I skimmed the manual before trying to play, and th...I skimmed the manual before trying to play, and there are a few additional features that pushed Super Hydlide past the original, which I shunned as a non-RPG. The story is pretty lightweight - especially compared with what was to come for the series.

Super Hylide huh? Never played that one (sorry to hear about your Genesis), though I really disliked the original on NES. Wizardry and Crystalis huh? There's a couple of titles I haven't touched in... forever.
